The ஔ-row compound letters — uyirmey (உயிர்மெய்) — are formed by joining each of the 18 pure consonants with the vowel . The result: 18 single glyphs that each carry one consonant and one vowel sound.

How they’re formed

க் + = கௌ (kau)  ·  ங் + = ஙௌ (ṅau)  ·  ச் + = சௌ (cau)

… and so on for all 18 consonants. The vowel sign attaches to every consonant in the same way.
