Tamil Months (மாதங்கள்)

The Tamil calendar year starts in mid-April with சித்திரை — aligned with the spring equinox — not in January. Each Tamil month straddles two Gregorian months because it follows the solar cycle. Festival dates and traditional almanacs are still reckoned in this calendar across Tamil Nadu and parts of the diaspora.

தை (month 10) opens with Pongal on the first day — the four-day harvest festival. சித்திரை (month 1) hosts Tamil New Year. மார்கழி (month 9) is the dawn-music month, dedicated to bhakti songs sung before sunrise; many Tamil names for daughters — மார்கழி, ஆடி — come from the month of birth.
