The collective term பூச்சிகள் (pūcchigaḷ) extends loosely to small crawling/flying creatures — including சிலந்தி (spider), which is technically an arachnid but is grouped here in everyday speech. வண்ணத்துப்பூச்சி (butterfly) is a compound: வண்ணம் (colour) + பூச்சி (insect).
