Most teen numbers in Tamil follow a simple recipe: பதி- or பதின்- (“ten and…”) glued to the base number. Three are irregular — பன்னிரண்டு (12), பத்தொன்பது (19) and இருபது (20) — and you simply learn those.
The recipe
பதி + மூன்று = பதிமூன்று (13) ·
பதின் + ஆறு = பதினாறு (16) ·
பதின் + ஏழு = பதினேழு (17)
Choice of பதி- vs பதின்- depends on the next sound — before vowels and certain consonants, the form ending in ṉ attaches more smoothly.
