Most Tamil colour names end in –பு or –ம், reflecting their noun origin (the language treats colours as “the redness”, “the blueness”). இளஞ்சிவப்பு (pink) is literally “young red” — இள (young) + சிவப்பு (red).

Using colour words
To describe an object as a colour, Tamil typically attaches the colour to the noun: சிவப்பு மலர் (a red flower), பச்சை இலை (a green leaf), நீல வானம் (the blue sky — the –ம் ending may drop before another noun for euphony). For multiple colours, conjoin with -உம்: சிவப்பும் வெள்ளையும் (red and white).
