These six positional words handle most everyday “where is it?” answers — in giving directions inside a room, on a page, or on a map. Notice that Tamil uses the same -ே ending for the spatial words (மேலே, கீழே, உள்ளே, வெளியே), which is a locative suffix meaning “at/in” that direction.

Using positions
Position words usually follow the noun they modify: மேசையின் மேலே (“on top of the table”), கதவின் வெளியே (“outside the door”). To say “to the left of X”, use X-இன் இடது பக்கம். The pair இடது / வலது are adjectives; மேலே / கீழே / உள்ளே / வெளியே are adverbs of place.
