Each Tamil weekday is named after the same celestial body as its European counterpart — ஞாயிறு (Sun) → Sunday, திங்கள் (Moon) → Monday, and so on through the classical seven-planet system. Knowing the mapping makes the names easy to remember and reveals why the orders match across so many languages.
The seven days (கிழமைகள்)
Using the day names
The bare form (ஞாயிறு) names the planet; for “Sunday” in a calendar sense, Tamil often adds the word கிழமை — ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை, திங்கட்கிழமை, etc. In conversation though, the short form is fine: இன்று ஞாயிறு (today is Sunday) reads as natural as the long form. வெள்ளி also means “silver” by colour association with Venus.
