Sea Creatures (கடல்வாழ் உயிரினங்கள்)

Tap any tile to hear the Tamil word spoken.

The collective is கடல்வாழ் உயிரினங்கள் — literally “sea-dwelling living things”. Tamil Nadu’s long coastline gives this vocabulary practical weight, particularly in seafood markets: மீன், நண்டு, இறால் are everyday menu items.

A note on loanwords

ஆக்டோபஸ் is borrowed from English — the older Tamil எண்கால் மீன் (“eight-legged fish”) is occasionally used but isn’t in common circulation. Tamil generally reaches for loanwords for creatures that aren’t native to the region’s waters.
